The meat industry has a very long running history in the United States. It started as early as 1490’s when Columbus brought Spanish Longhorns to the West Indies. Then in 1539 Desoto brought pigs to Florida. This is when meat was introduced into America. In 1662 William Pynchon became the Nation’s very first meat packer. Later on in 1818 the first meat packing plant was formed in Cincinnati-city and it was called “Porkopolis”. Early American Settlers saw that there was immense profit to be made through the meat industry so people invested in the farming and selling of animal meat. Throughout the 1870’s-90’s the meat packing industry began to spread westwards. The meat industry began at that particular time because Columbus had brought animals that were used for feeding back from Spain. They then massively began introducing these types of animals into the U.S until they realized that the supply for meat was becoming stronger and stronger. That’s when early businessmen and farmers began to commercialize meat into big industries therefore forming what we have today.
