As of 2014, the average person around the world consumed 75 pounds of meat. In the U.S alone the average American consumed 198 pounds of meat that same year. These numbers are not getting any smaller. In fact, as the years progress the meat consumption globally is rising dramatically. This is a problem not only to the animals that are being slaughtered but it also comes back to us. Environmentally, this is an issue because the amount of cattle being raised increases as demand increases. This is because as people start eating more meat, meat producers have to keep up with the demands. More cattle ties directly to contamination. Cows release methane through gas. Methane gas is a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases include things such as carbon dioxide(Co2).What greenhouse gases do is that they trap heat from the sun and make the earth warmer. The process of trapping heat goes like this: The sun shines its rays of light into the earth. Naturally, these rays are supposed to bounce back into space. What greenhouse gases do is that instead of letting these gases bounce back into space, they trap the heat and don’t let it bounce back into space hence making the earth hotter. We are already facing the problem of global warming and methane from cows is already a major contributor since it is responsible for 18% of global warming.. If more cattle is being raised as the years go by then global warming will only get worse.
There is a way that people can make a change to diminish these issues.. If people start to lessen their meat consumption globally, that would make meat producers produce less meat since demand is going lower and lower. The problem is people are consuming way too much meat and if at a global level people reduce their meat consumption we can actually change the methane emissions. If people get educated on how their meat consumption is directly affecting our planet then they can understand why it is crucial to cut down on the meat. Although this seems like a change that’s very possible to make, it is going to be difficult because the general population usually feel their contribution to a global issue is not important since they only think of themselves as a person that makes no difference in the issue, but millions of others think alike and that’s when we have a mass of people who think they won’t make a change.
